How do they get out again?  At first a homemade ladder, then  by a rope , which is hung over a cross bar  made of a tree branch.  They use a pulley to bring up buckets of dirt and rock and then the worker uses the rope to get out of the hole.

These homemade bricks look pretty rough, but once they are  plastered over  you can't tell.  Perhaps they smooth them off before building.
